Why We Say The Arc of Monroe and The Arc Ontario
Please refer to our organization as The Arc of Monroe—not ARC, ARC of Monroe, or The ARC of Monroe. The same goes for The Arc Ontario—not The ARC Ontario.
Years ago, many Arc chapters used the acronym ARC, which stood for Association for Retarded Citizens. As self-advocates and disability rights advocates worked to eliminate outdated and harmful language, The Arc dropped the acronym from its name. Today, The Arc is simply our name—it is not an acronym and should never be written in all capital letters. Using The Arc of Monroe and The Arc Ontario honors that advocacy and reflects our commitment to dignity, inclusion, and respect.
